چکیده

Abstract The detailed characterization of snow particles is critical for understanding the settling behavior and modeling ground accumulation various applications such as prevention avalanches snowmelt‐caused floods, etc. In this study, we present a particle analyzer simultaneous measurements properties fresh falling snow, including their size, shape, type, density. consists digital inline holography module imaging in sample volume 88 cm 3 high‐precision scale to measure weight same synchronized fashion. holographic images are processed real‐time using machine learning model post‐processing determine type. Such information used obtain estimated volume, which subsequently correlated with estimate performance assessed monodispersed spherical glass foam beads, irregular salt crystals, thin disks shapes known density, shows <10% density measurement errors. addition, was tested number field deployments under different wind conditions. system able achieve at single resolution statistical robustness. also deployed four hours operation during event changing conditions, demonstrating its potential long‐term monitoring time‐varying field.

Remote Sensing, Model-Derived and Ground Measurements of Snow Water Equivalent and Snow Density in Alaska

Snow water equivalent (SWE) is important for investigations of annual to decadal-scale changes in A and energy-water cycles. Passive microwave satellite-based retrieval algorithm estimates of SWE now sp three decades. SWE retrievals by the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth Ob (AMSR-E) onboard the NASA-Aqua satellite ended at October 2011. A critical parameter in the AM gorith...

Radar measurements of snow: experiment and analysis

This paper considers two specific types of experiments conducted to improve our understanding of radar backscatter from snow-covered ground surfaces. The first experiment involves radar backscatter measurements at Cand X-band of artificial snow of varying depths. The relatively simple target characteristics, combined with an exhaustive ground truth effort, make the results of this experiment es...

Modeling bulk density and snow water equivalent using daily snow depth observations

Bulk density is a fundamental property of snow relating its depth and mass. Previously, two simple models of bulk density (depending on snow depth, date, and location) have been developed to convert snow depth observations to snow water equivalent (SWE) estimates. However, these models were not intended for application at the daily time step. We develop a new model of bulk density for the daily...

Snow cover monitoring and snow density estimation using ALOS-PALSAR data

Snow cover mapping is a very important parameter for snowmelt runoff modeling and forecasting. Snow cover information is also useful for managing transportation and avalanche forecasting. This study will discuss the capability of full polarimetric L-band ALOS PALSAR data for snow classification. Therefore, Polarimetric decomposition and the complex Wishart classifier will be applied on ALOSPALS...
